EH Update October 2005

1.    Finance

The England Hockey end of year accounts for the year 1st September 2004 / 31st August 2005 are looking on course to show a healthy surplus. This should be viewed in the context of our ongoing planning to build up reserves to allow for unforeseen circumstances. This policy is in line with guidelines that Sport England is proving to all NGB’s.

2.    Competitions

We are submitting a bid to the 2007 European Hockey Federation to host the men’s and women’s European Cup in Manchester. The bid is dependant on us securing funding to support the event and with this in mind we are currently working with UK Sport and Manchester City Council. If we are successful the planning will start in February 2006 and a separate four nation event is envisaged as part of the lead in period.

As you will be aware the national indoor Finals have been moved to the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham with the event taking place on Sunday 6th February rather than the traditional Friday night at Crystal Palace. The new venue offers 5000 seats as opposed to 1200 in London and also provides greater opportunity for televised coverage. To maximise the pre event publicity we will be seeking your assistance and with this in mind will be providing both electronic and hard copy posters and flyers. These will be available along with tickets early in October.

Whilst we are with the competitions theme, we please are delighted to welcome Nick Martin as the latest member of our competitions team.

3.    England Hockey Roadshows 2006

As part of ongoing strategy “Uniting the Hockey Family” we are again planning a serious of roadshows. Like this year events the evenings will again take place early in the year (February). This time they will be themed around the 2012 Olympics and LTAD. Further information will be announced in October / November.

4.    Coaching

Following recent problems with the delivery of resources from 1st for Sport for both the new VRQ Level One and Two courses a meeting has taken place with First for Sport. We are reassured that these problems are now overcome. However please advise the regional office of any further issues!

5.    The New Coaching for Teachers Courses

The new course programme, marketing material along with organisational guidelines are now out and we can already report high levels of interest. We expect there to be heavy demand over the next few months. Please support us in promoting and effectively arranging these courses.

6.    New Leadership Award.

We are really excited about our new Leadership Award with the new courses due to be launched at the PDM Conference in November. We are encouraging all partners to delay running courses until the new courses are available and would encourage you to do the same. An update and training will be provided at the time of the launch.

7.    Club Affiliation 2005/6

The first stage of affiliation has started with all clubs having been mailed the new seasons afflation forms, with several already received back. As normal this is a two stage process with invoices being sent out during September. At this stage clubs will also receive the next issue of England Hockey News.

8.    Clubs 1st Target!

We have set a target of 50 clubs to have achieved the Clubs 1st Award by March next year and 100 by September. We will therefore be looking for you to support us in reaching indeed beating these targets. Note that we have at present 32 accredited clubs with several nearing completion but with 425 clubs registered, we have plenty still to do!
